New Business:

1. Rich introduced a new member, John Hicks, who will be joining our club. He has done some carving in the past and is looking to learn more about carving and socialize with other carvers.

2. Rich stated there will be several carving events coming up soon: In February -- two in Florida and one in Alabama. Also, there will be two in March -- one in Springfield, MO and the other in Lebanon, TN (the Renegade Woodcarvers Roundup). Gene indicated that the Leipers Fork Carving Club will host Josh Walters for a cottonwood bark carving class March 1-3, 2024 ($150 plus the bark). Also, at Leipers Fork, there will be a class on chip carving class taught by Bill Johnson ($180 plus the blank). It is scheduled for May 16 - 18, 2024 (the 18th is a half day). Go to the "Events" tab on the club website for additional infomation on all of these events.

3. Rich indicated that he will be out of town for possibly 4-8 weeks to help his sister who is experiencing severe medical issues. He will set up automatic reminders regarding meetings, but if any meeting needs to be cancelled because of the weather or other reasons, someone will need to let him know so the automatic email does not go out.

4. Rich mentioned that in Granville the "Mayberry Lucy Day" is scheduled for April 13th, the "Cornbread and Moonshine" Festival is scheduled for May 4th, and the "Heritage Day" event is scheduled for May 25th. The date of the Fall Celebration has not been announced yet but it typically happens in October. These are events that the club participates in as artisans where we demonstrate our craft and we are welcome to sell our carvings.

5. Gene brought several boxes of wood to give away to anyone who wanted it -- he was cleaning out his lumber room. Jon had a roughout of an ocean wave to give away. Gene also brought his sharpening system to demonstrate as well as sharpen tools for our new members.

Show & Tell

Seven members had carvings to show at the meeting. First, Phil had a Christmas Nativity Stable (creche) that he made for a friend. It was made out of a pine 2 X 4 that he cut to size on a bandsaw. The friend was going to stain the creche herself.

Butch had a relief carving that was done in John Engler's class and also a Santa christmas ornament -- both out of basswood.

Jon displayed a "love spoon" and a ocean wave with two dolphins. The spoon and the wave were made from basswood and dolphins from red cedar. He also had three Christmas ornaments and a moth all carved from basswood.

Rob carved a chess set of gnomes from a 1 x 1 piece of basswood. He painted them using acrylic paint.

Joe displayed a sculpture of a Greek boy he carved out of butternut. He also had a caricature of an old man with a removable head.

Gene had a group of study sticks he carved showing the steps in carving a face, hand, and foot. He also had a variety of charicature style carvings to include two of Miroslaw Czeladka "Nochals", two Vikings, a woodcarver, and a Christmas ornament.

John, our new member, displayed some Santas and elf Christmas ornaments that he recently carved. We look forward to seeing more of his creations in future meetings.

Lastly, back in December, Gene taught a class on carving a Christmas ornament for our new members and he invited anyone who wanted to join in to do so. There were a total of seven of us who carved and painted the ornament during our Tuesday meetings although two members painted at home since they were unable to attend the painting meeting.

Ornaments were carved by the following people: Top row (L to R) -- Clark, Butch, Rob; Bottom Row -- Gene, Gene, Brenda

Jon carved the ornament on the left and Rich the ornament on the right.
